A few years ago I approached Gudrun Hartmann of Jack Mack Smooth Collies in Germany with the view to hopefully purchase and import to the UK one of Gudrun's Smooth Collies as I have always admired Gudrun and the Jack Mack Smooth Collies.
Whilst in the process of purchasing a blue bitch puppy call name of Tien, I had an accident at Paignton Championship Show (2012) and was left with a permanent disability so there was a real chance that my dream of having a Smooth Collie would not be achieved. Luckily whilst speaking with Nick Smith of Tentola Collies (Rough and Smooth), Nick and Anne offered to have Tien for me in Spain where they now live for a year whilst I recovered enough to be able to show well enough and keep up with a Smooth Collie. With such a generous offer, I offered Tien in partnership with Nick and Anne, so it was agreed that Tien would go to Spain with Nick and Anne for a year and then she would come to the UK and remain here with us at Shandlmain. Nick and Anne have campaigned Tien in Gibraltar, Spain and Portugal and Tien has been made up a Spanish, Portugese and Gibraltar Junior Champion and has had 11 Group Placings and also won Adult CAC and CACIB before she left Spain at 17 months old. Tien also qualified for Crufts 2014 whilst being shown in Gibralatar and achieved 1st Junior Bitch at Collie Association Championship Show at her debut show in the UK and also 1st in Special Junior Bitch at Crufts 2014 so has already qualified for Crufts 2015. Tien came back into our sole ownership in 2016, many thanks to Nick and Anne for campaigning her on the Continent.
Tien has achieved a Reserve Best In Show at East Anglian Collie Association and also won Reserve CC at Scottish kennel Club giving her her UK Stud Book Number amongst various other wins at both Open and Championship Shows.
At the end of May 2016 Tien produced a lovely litter of puppies to Ch. Foxearth Frappuccino of which we retained 2 puppies, the only bitch puppy born and a blue merle dog puppy. One blue merle dog puppy will be going to Nick and Anne Smith to live in Spain in their sole ownership, Tien has been returned into our ownership and no longer co-owned with Nick and Anne. A dog puppy has gone to live in Germany with Tien's Breeder, Gudrun Hartmann and one dog puppy went as a service dog with the other is living in a pet home. Both Smooths that have gone to live abroad now hold multi Champion Titles. Tien, after having her litter, only is shown occasionally, in September 2018 we took Tien to Sheringham under Breed Specialist Emily Benelman's where she won Open Class and Reserve Best of Breed.

15th FEBRUARY 2019 - PUPPIES BORN OUT OF ALICE (SUMMER SHADOW'S SHANDLMAIN) X ETON (JACK MACK'S VA BUIDHINN OF SHANDLMAIN)
Alice gave birth today to 8 tri colour puppies but unfortunately not every birth goes smoothly. Unfortunately a puppy had died earlier on and was not reabsorbed so contaminated most of the litter resulting in 6 dead puppies at birth and 2 survivors, there was one bitch and a dog puppy but 27 hours after the birth, the bitch puppy succumbed to the toxins produced by the pup that died early on and passed away, leaving Alice with one dog puppy to raise. This puppy is not going anywhere and has been named Shandlmain Scout.

28th June 2019 - Windsor Championship Show - Windsor has to be one of my favourite General Championship Shows in the UK, beautiful setting with Windsor Castle in the background, and Windsor is also the very first Championship Show I attended back in the early 1990's. Today was a beautiful day with wonderful weather and made all the better as Eton won his Junior Class and then to top it off, at 17 months old, won the Reserve Dog CC giving him his UK Stud Book Number and Life Qualification of Crufts. A very proud Mummy Day! Many thanks to Breed Specialist Mr Keith Starkey.
We were also pleased to see Jon (Int Ch. Winter is Coming to Tentola) who is one of Tien's puppies now just over 3 years of age, with owners Nick and Anne Smith who are over from Spain for a while this summer. Jon won the Open Dog class and is pictured below in the Dog Challenge.

14th September 2019 - DARLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
Today we attended Darlington Championship Show with Hawk and Scout only as we decided would be good training and left Dad Eton at home (first time Eton has not attended a show since we have had him). Hawk won Minor Puppy Dog Class and Scout was placed 2nd Puppy Dog ( I cannot show both in the same class at the same time) under Judge Miss Diane Spavin. Really pleased that Scout qualified for Crufts at his first Championship Show. But the day got even better. Hawk won the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate (and Best Puppy Dog) at only 6 and half months old, giving him his Stud Book Number and qualifying Hawk for Crufts for life! Absolutely thrilled at this result!

Manchester Championship Show - 17th January 2020
A very early start to the day today, leaving home at 04:30 as Judging for Smooth Collies today started at 09:00, a very good entry of 30 Smooth Collies. Just had a feeling today would not be a good day when I arrived as the ground where I was parked was so wet and muddy and Eton had decided to revert back to being like a puppy! How wrong was I! Keira showed Chief in Puppy Dog and won the class, Eton was in Limit Dog on his own and standing showed well but moved like he was on a mission to be somewhere else (he can be an idiot some times!) and won 1st Limit Dog, Jon was handled by owner Nick and I was really pleased to see him win Open Dog. On to the challenge and I was thrilled when Jon (Winter is Coming to Tentola) bred by us, won the Dog Challenge Certificate, his first UK CC which adds to his International Titles and the 2 UK Reserve Challenge Certificates Jon now has. 2nd in Open was brought in again and I was so thrilled when Chief handled by co-owner Keira, was awarded the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate which gives him his UK Stud Book Number! A first double for our Kennel and awarded by much respected Judge Albert White! I drove home very happy indeed! So many congratulations to Nick and Anne Smith who are Jon's co-breeders and owners of Jon and also to Keira and Matt Martin who are co-owners of Chief with ourselves. Chief is Keira and Matt's first dog they have raised at home from a puppy and Keira does a wonderful job handling this lovely boy.
CRUFTS 2020 - 7th March 2020
A very early start for Crufts 2020 leaving home at 03:45. We had entered 2 dogs under Judge Mr G Francis from home out of the 4 that had qualified, Hawk I had decided would not attend and had not entered Tien or Scout, I debated taking Eton as he has been shedding his coat and did not decide to take him until the Wednesday before the show (saturday) when I bathed him and thought he looked quite nice.
Smooth Collie judging commenced at 10:30 am and the first of the dogs in the ring for us was Chief (Shandlmain Blu Chief) with his co-owner Keira, who won the Junior Dog class which was a fantastic start, so very pleased! Eton was entered in Limit Dog and against a dog from overseas who I was told, was being handled by a professional handler. I was very pleased that Eton behaved himself and did not put a foot wrong and was placed 1st Limit Dog. Jon (Winter is Coming to Tentola) who is home bred here at Shandlmain out of Tien and Ch. Foxearth Frappuccino (Charlie) and owned by Nick and Anne Smith was entered in a strong Open Dog Class and was placed VHC so very pleased all dogs we have interest in were placed. In the Dog Challenge the Challenge Certificate and Best Dog (eventual Best of Breed Winner) went to an overseas multi Champion Dog that had won the Open Dog Class, then to top off a lovely day of winning awards at the largest dog show in the World with the largest entry of Smooth Collies, Eton was awarded the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate and Reserve Best Dog! What a wonderful day we had especially as 3 days before, I was thinking of not taking him at all! So very proud of all the boys entered for Crufts 2020!
DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC SHOWS AFTER CRUFTS 2020 HAVE BEEN CANCELLED
2021 - Shows resume
So - after what seemed like the longest time ever, Dog Shows started again on
30th April 2021 with East Anglian Collie Association Championship Show (no CC's for Smooths)
Eton was in Limit Dog class and after a long lay off proved to be a fool on the day, but won his class, Arya at her very first show was placed 2nd in Junior Bitch.
13th June 2021 - London Collie Club 2020 and 2021 Championship Show(s) Judge Show 1 - Geoff Hyde, Judge Show 2 - Claire Norman
Not the best Judges for us but I love this show and we were craving a show so entered. First Show Eton was placed 2nd out of 3 in Limit Dog behind the Dog CC winner, and Katie (Shandlmain's Sofistikate) at her very first show was a star in my eyes, not putting a foot wrong and was placed 2nd in Puppy Bitch class. Arya did not like being undercover (a canopy covers the rings) and was placed 3rd. Both the girls qualified for Crufts at their very first Championship Show with CC's on offer. Well done Girls!
The 2nd Show followed straight on and again, Eton placed 2nd again in Limit Dog Class, Katie was placed 3rd out of 3 and Arya was placed 2nd out of 3.
Not the best of shows overall but these are practice shows.
25th July 2021 - Leeds Championship Dog Show - Judge Michelle Fort
Lovely show, another of my favourites. The day started with Chief (Shandlmain Blu Chief) winning Post Graduate Dog class handled by co-owner (and his Mum) Keira Martin. Next interest for us was Gib Ch. Esp Ch. Port Ch. Winter is Coming to Tentola whom we bred and is owned by Nick and Anne Smith, today expertly handled by Anne. Jon won the Open Dog class and in the Challenge won his 2nd CC! So thrilled! Moving on to the girls, Katie won puppy bitch with 4 puppies present giving her 3 points toward her JW (we never chase JW) and her sister, Shandlmain's Shuri with Sturtmoor, handled by her co-owner Keira Martin was placed 2nd in the class. Arya won Junior Bitch so Keira handled Arya for me in the Bitch Challenge. A lovely day for us.
1st August 2021 - East Anglian Collie Association Championship Show (no CC's) - Judge Di Collino and SAC Judge Janine Hanson
Lovely day for us today. Katie won Junior Dog/Bitch and another JW point (only 1 point without CC's), Arya won Post Graduate Dog/Bitch and Eton won Limit Dog/Bitch! Jon won Open Dog and BOB with Anne again. Katie won Best Puppy in Breed and ended up Reserve Best Puppy in Show. Katie also won the Special Award AV Puppy Dog/Bitch class being the only Smooth against 3 other rough collie puppies.
16th August 2021 - Bournemouth Championship show - Breed Judge Anne Hassock - Royal Canin Junior Stakes Judge - Mr Darren Clarke
I always travel to this show as is 10 minutes away from where my Mum lives and my Mum always visits the show to see me with her partner Geoff. I only entered Arya as again, not a favourable Judge for us but worth the 6 hour drive each way and overnight stay to see my Mum. Arya was placed 2nd behind her sister in Junior bitch in the breed classes but we also entered under Darren Clarke with 24 entries, I was thrilled that Arya was placed and placed well being 3rd in the class! Thrilled!
22nd August 2021 - SCCGB Championship Show (2020)- Judge Delia Moores
Our Breed Club Show today and what a wonderful show and day it was. Lovely garden party atmosphere with pet owners and other breed judges spectating as well. Everything ran like clockwork and I was really pleased as this was my first Club Championship Show as Acting Chairman of the Club. We started off really well with Katie winning Puppy Bitch class and Reserve Best Puppy in Show (another 3 JW points!) Katie's sister Shuri was 2nd in the class behind Katie again. Arya was placed 2nd in Junior Bitch behind her sister.
22nd August 2021 - SCCGB Open Show (2020)- Judge Darren Clarke
Our Breed Club Open show from 2020 followed the Championship Show. Our Judge being all rounder Darren Clarke who was wonderful with all the dogs he handled and a smile on his face throughout the show. I was thrilled that Katie won the Puppy Bitch Class (another JW point!) and then went on to beat the Best Puppy Dog for Best Puppy in Show! Shuri was again 2nd behind her sister Katie. Arya was 2nd behind her sister Lyra and Eton won his Limit Dog class.
29th August 2021 - London & Provincial Collie Club Championship Show (no CC's)- Judge Joe Smith
Katie was entered in Puppy Dog/Bitch and won the class with her sister Shuri being 2nd. Katie was then Best Puppy in Breed and eventually Reserve Best Puppy in Show! (another JW point!) Arya won Junior Dog/Bitch class and Reserve Best Bitch in Breed and Chief won Open Dog, Best Dog in Breed and Reserve Best of Breed! Fantastic day with fantastic company at another favourite show!
5th September 2021 - Yorkshire Collie Club Championship Show (no CC's) Judge Angela Harvey
Katie was entered in Puppy Dog/Bitch and won the Class whilst Arya was entered in Post Graduate Dog/Bitch and won her class also. Katie then went on the win Best Puppy in Breed and Reserve Best Puppy in in Show
2nd October 2021 - Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show - Judge Mrs Jill Peak
This was a 2 night stay over for us being quite a distance. Chief won the Limit Dog class with Jon winning Open Dog and Eton coming 2nd behind Jon. Was thrilled to see Jon win the Dog CC, his third making him a UK Champion to join his International titles!
Katie was placed 3rd in Puppy Bitch (not really liking the venue) behind her litter sister Cali (Shandlmain Serene) owned by Tracy Kennedy, this was Tracy and Cali's first ever show so I was thrilled to witness Cali and Tracy do so well, qualifying for Crufts 2022 at her first outing. Shuri (Shandlmain Shuri) was the only entry in Junior Bitch (Keira avoiding being in the same class as Katie). Arya won the Post Graduate Bitch class so two bitches owned by us in the Bitch Challenge. Was thrilled to see Shuri, still a puppy, be given the green card and win the Bitch CC! A very proud moment when both the Best Dog and the Best Bitch were bred by myself and Mark (Jon being co-bred with Nick and Anne Smith but born and raised here). Jon was awarded Best of Breed. Well worth the trip away to Scotland!
12th December 2021- Ladies Kennel Association Championship Show - Judge Mrs Ann French
The last Championship Show of the Year. We only took Arya today, but was really pleased that we did! Arya won a strong Limit Bitch Class, and then in the Challenge was awarded the Reserve CC!
2022
23rd January 2022 - Manchester Championship Show - Judge Mr John Ritchie
The first Championship Dog Show of the Year and what a show it was for us! Chief was entered in Limit Dog and Jon (owned by Nick and Anne Smith) was in Open Dog. Both won their classes so both in the dog challenge. I was absolutely thrilled that this year there was a role reversal, Chief clinching top spot for his first Dog CC and Jon (Chief's half brother) winning the Dog Reserve CC!! Tracy came down from Scotland with Cali and was placed in her class which was huge, so a great achievement there also. Arya won Limit Bitch Class.
This year being as though costs for everything have gone up extremely high including fuel and hotel accommodation, we are being very particular as to which shows we choose to enter and definitely shows that we may normally enter but have to stay over for due to overnight accommodation cost.
8th May 2022 - Birmingham National Championship Dog Show - Judge Sue Hewert-Chambers
Today we took Eton and Arya, leaving Katie home. Eton won Limit Dog Class and Arya won Limit Bitch Class. I was really pleased to see Arya's breeder win the Bitch CC with Arya's full litter sister, Lyra, huge congratulations to Jo and Richard Denton on a fabulous win and special litter.
14th May 2022 - SCCGB back to back Open Shows. Show 1 Judge - Mr Brian Hull, Show 2 Judge - Miss Abby Lusty
Catching up on shows that could not go ahead due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, 2 shows held today. Show 1 was great with Eton 2nd in Limit Dog behind Chief, Katie winning a good special yearling bitch class, then Arya winning a strong Limit Bitch Class and also being declared Best Bitch. Jon went on to win Best Dog and Best of Breed over Arya who was Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best of Breed. By Show 2, my plantar fasciitis was giving me grief and all the dogs came 2nd in their respective classes.
20th May 2022 - Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show - Judge Mr Stuart Mallard
Much to my disappointment, I could not attend Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show this year, the accommodation I stayed in last year had more than doubled in price and with fuel and entry fees as well, I could have booked a week's holiday! However, flying the Shandlmain flag was Tracy Kennedy and the lovely Cali (Shandlmain Serene), Cali being Tracy's first ever dog and this being Tracy and Cali's 5th show, they were not expecting too much but what a wonderful day Tracy and Cali had! Cali won the Post Graduate Bitch class and in the Bitch Challenge won the Bitch CC! Tracy being a beginner also won the Special Beginners Class and represented the Smooth Collie extremely well winning Pastoral Special Beginners Group 2!! Fantastic results and huge congratulations to them both.
29th May 2022 - Bath Championship Dog Show - Judge Mrs Sue Bird
This is one show I love, the grounds are kept to perfection by the show society and although it is a 4 and half hour drive for me to attend, it is one of my favourites so overnight hotel booked and off I set with Eton and Arya. I did not expect anything except for an enjoyable show. in Dogs Eton won Limit Dog beating his son Chief and I was happy with that. Jon was awarded the Dog Reserve CC behind Bob Naull's Champion Dog. Arya won her Limit Bitch class which was one of the largest classes in Smooth Collies and I was happy with that. In the Challenge I was thrilled Arya was awarded the Bitch CC and in the Challenge for Best of Breed, Arya did it again, she won Best of Breed! It was a very long day, the Smooth Collie Judging finished at 10:30am and we waited for the Group of which we did not feature but Arya did me proud representing our breed and did not put a foot wrong. A long journey home getting back at 22:15!! But well worth it!
12th June 2022 - London Collie Club Championship Show - Judge Miss Miranda Blake
Arya decided directly after Bath Championship Show that it was a good idea to come into season so missed out on this show. This venue (Dobermann Club) has changed the surface since last year for the better, Katie was the only one we were able to take today and she did not let herself or us down and won the Post Graduate Bitch Class. I was really pleased with her as she has not been shown for quite a while.
19th June 2022 - West of England Collie Association Championship Show - Judge Mrs Bev White
Another long distance venue but a breed club I love, being the first breed club I became a member of when I started showing rough collies back in the '90's. So another overnight stay the night before as too far to travel in one day. An indoor venue and was Katie's first indoor show since she was spooked at Birmingham National last year, so I was thrilled that she was very happy and confident and took it all in her stride, winning 2nd Post Graduate Bitch. Arya was entered in Limit and again, placed 2nd in Limit Bitch. The CC was awarded to the winner of Limit Bitch so Arya was called back in to challenge for the Res. CC and we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded this honor, so Arya now has 1 CC and 2 Res CC's.
10th July 2022 - Collie Association Open Show 1 - Judge Sandra Wigglesworth
Smooth Collies at this show originally should have been Judged by Mrs. C Bailey (Zottels) but unfortunately the Judge contracted Covid-19 just prior to the show so was unable to attend and therefore Smooth Collies had a replacement Judge in Mrs Sandra Wigglesworth. Katie was unsure of this Judge to be honest, the Judge had been stood under the gazeebo with only part of her showing to Katie which did unsettle her prior to being assessed but Katie still moved well and was awarded 2nd Special Yearling Bitch. Arya stood alone on Open Bitch as the other two entries were absent on the day so was awarded 1st Open Bitch but I was very pleased that she won Best Bitch and then Res Best of Breed behind Jon who won Best of Breed and then against the Rough Collie, Jon was awarded Best in Show by Mr. Richard Kinsey (Kitarn).
10th July 2022 - Collie Association Open Show 2 - Judge Miss Claire Norman
Another replacement Judge as Mrs Denise Rowan (Rowancrest) was unable to attend. Katie liked this Judge (as she normally does) and won the Special Yearling Bitch class. Arya won her Open Bitch class also. Our daughter-in-law Georgina Howard was present on the day showing Jon for her Mum and Dad so Georgie handled Katie in the Bitch Challenge whilst I handled Arya. Arya was awarded Best Bitch and then Georgie had to do a quick swap to get Jon out to challenge for Best of Breed as Jon had been awarded Best Dog, so many thanks to Georgie for helping me out as Mark had not attended this show. I was thrilled that Claire Norman found her Best of Breed in Arya, and Jon was awarded Reserve Best of Breed this time. After waiting for the Rough Collies to finish their judging, Arya and myself went in to Challenge for Best in Show under Breed Specialist Judge, Mrs Ann French (Breckamore) and I was thrilled that Arya won BEST IN SHOW, with Jon then being called in to challenge the rough collie again for Reserve Best in Show and Jon came out on top winning RESERVE BEST IN SHOW. A great day!
22nd July 2022 - Leeds Championship Dog Show - Judge Mrs Penny Sewell
A wonderful day at Leeds Championship Show with Katie winning the Post Graduate Bitch class and Arya winning the Open Bitch Class under breed specialist Mrs. Penny Sewell. We were thrilled when Arya was also awarded the Reserve CC, so Arya now has 1 x CC and 3 x Reserve CC's.
